Participate in a stretching study for runners

Stretchstudylogo USATF is conducting a study to determine the effect of pre-run stretching on running injuries. The purpose of the study is to determine specifically if pre-run stretching of the three major leg muscle groups is beneficial for overall injury prevention or reduction. The study is not examining in-run or post-run stretching.

Becoming the Tin Man

Images Blog:  I was out running today and the IT band in my left knee started hurting.  It was as if my knee was going to completely lock up.  I felt like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz.  I thought I might need an oil can to unfreeze my knee.

Well, I made it through my run, but I'm afraid that my IT band troubles are back.  I had them last year and thought I'd gotten rid of them with a stretching routine my doctor recommended.  I guess I'll have to do more stretching.  This pain sucks.

If you're experiencing similar pain, here are a few links to some stretches that will help you:

Running to embrace yoga

20080205_033006_runnersyoga_viewer Blog:  Here's an article about a woman that has developed a yoga class for runners.  As a runner, she believes that yoga teaches body awareness.  Instead of listening to new age music and chanting during her class, she plays contemporary music to get the students pumped.  All of the yoga postures done in class are derivatives of traditional poses but tailored to meet a runner's needs.  They are designed to strengthen areas of a runner's body that take the most abuse.

Stay Loose: Stretches for Runners

Images3_2 Blog:  I posted earlier today about my need to do more stretching.  I know I'm destined for an injury if I don't start stretching before and after I run.  I found another good article that I wanted to post.  It has a good description and picture of each stretching exercise.

What is your stretching program?

Getting ready for a run? Try these stretches

Blog:  This article demonstrates 4 strengthening and balance exercises and two yoga-derived stretches to do after warming up or exercising to increase strength, flexibility and prevent injury.  This information is really good for me because I'm the world's worst when it comes to stretching.  I just put on my running gear and run.  If I don't start stretching, I know it will come back to haunt me.
