I received an email from the "Oklahoma Runner and Triathlete" newsletter today. The email focuses on training too much.

Blog: I received an email from the "Oklahoma Runner and Triathlete" newsletter today. The email focuses on training too much. Here it is:

Are You OVERtraining?

Running and exercise is good for you and your body. That being said, is more exercise always better?

Sometimes more is just too much. If exercise
is leaving you more exhausted than energized, you could be suffering
from a case of overtraining. Individuals who excessively exercise are
risking more than poor performance: they're risking their health. Here
are several signs you might be overtraining:

Agitation, Moodiness, Irritability

Too much exercise and not enough rest can
wreak havoc on our hormones. This can cause mood swings and an
inability to focus on daily tasks.

Decreased performance
Slower reaction times, reduced speed and lowered endurance levels are all common signs of overtraining.

Excessive fatigue

A body that never has a chance to fully recover from a previous workout will continue to feel more and more fatigued.

Loss of Appetite

Overtraining can cause an increase in hormones such as epinephrine and norepinephrine that tend to inhibit appetite.

Chronically Elevated Heart Rate

A clear sign of an overworked heart muscle
is a chronically elevated heart rate. Also, people who overtrain will
often find that it takes longer for their heart rate to return to
normal following a workout.

More Frequent Illnesses

Too much exercise taxes all of the body's systems and makes it more difficult to ward off infections.

Insomnia or Restless Sleep

During sleep, the body has time to rest and
repair itself. An overtrained body, however, is sometimes unable to
slow down and completely relax, making it difficult to recover between
workouts.

______________________________

An Artful Jogger in Beijing: The Pollution Is Not an Issue

Almost everything I was told about running in Beijing was wrong. My clothes would turn gray from pollution. I would be coughing and wheezing, hacking out black phlegm. I would never see any Chinese runners. I should just concentrate on getting some miles in — there was no way I would ever be able to maintain a reasonable pace. Or maybe I should just give up and spend my time on treadmills in the gym.

Forgettable night for U.S. runners

If you were looking for them, the ominous signs were everywhere,
pointing to a forgettable night for the United States track and field
team.

Let's start with Saturday night. Lauryn Williams
had easily advanced through a preliminary heat of the 100 meters. The
two-time silver medalist -- who always brings her best to the biggest
stage -- was sauntering through the interview area unimpeded when a
reporter reached out and tapped her on the shoulder.

Click here to read the rest of the story

__________________________________________________

"Can you sweep?" the reporter asked, referring to a medal sweep by Williams and her compatriots Torri Edwards and Muna Lee.

"Sweep?"
Williams asked, bemused. And the reporter nodded his head. "Like, sweep
the floor?" Williams said. Her lips curled into a smile seconds later
as the nature of the question registered. "Oh! Yes, definitely, but the
competition from Jamaica is fierce, so we gotta prepare mentally."
