Officers say a 68-year-old man died during a marathon that went from Boulder Junction and Eagle River on Saturday.
The sheriff's department says it received a report of a man collapsing during the Journey's Marathon.
Officers took 68-year-old Robert Zapranoff of Mercer to the hospital.
That's where the coroner pronounced him dead.
The marathon is in its 12th year. The Eagle River Chamber of Commerce says Zapranoff is the first person to die during the event.
Online records show Zapranoff completed the race last year.

Blog: Nick Arciniaga, the top American finisher at the Boston Marathon, had to overcome a few obstacles at the first of this year. He sprained his ankle and couldn't run for 3 weeks. He then witnessed his teammate get hit by a car during a training run. Luckily, he was able to put it all behind him and make it to Boston.

A long-distance runner who died competing in southern Colorado has been identified as John J. Marini of Littleton.
The Chaffee County Coroner's Office said this morning that Marini, 59, died of a heart attack.
Marini, who had been a distance runner for many years, was
competing Saturday in the Collegiate Peaks Trail Run near Buena Vista
when he collapsed.
Blog: I know this isn't the first time that it has been done, but I'm still really impressed with barefoot runners. And, when they run a marathon, I'm seriously impressed.

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Nike is sponsoring what it calls the world's
biggest one-day running event.Nike has dubbed the Aug. 25 event "The
Human Race," which will be held in 25 cities from Los Angeles to Taipei.
The company is encouraging runners who are not in those cities to participate by using Nike equipment that allows them to share information and compete online with other runners.
The routes will take runners by famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge. -- Associated Press
