Jogging is no joke in this much smog

Snn0807np682_549745a

Blog:  Here's an interesting article from THE SUN that talks about the smog at the Olympics.

ATHLETES have hit out at the polluted conditions in Beijing — which I experienced first hand on a jog around the city.

My gentle run along the route of the marathon left me feeling like I’d polished off 60 high-tar cigarettes.

I’m reasonably fit, but nothing could prepare me for the steamy fug, 95°F heat and 80 per cent humidity. I was even overtaken by a pensioner in an electric wheelchair.

Yesterday Chilean tennis star Fernando Gonzalez said: “Conditions are tough with the pollution. We don’t have too many days to adapt.”

Slovakian ace Daniela Hantuchova added: “It’s tough.”

Favorite Olympic Event

Blog: I'm sitting here at my son's football practice reading articles on my iPhone about the Olympics. I have to admit that I'm an Olympic nut. I love to watch many of the events. I'm excited for swimming, soccer, and all of the track and field events.

What about you? What events do you like? Post them in the comments section below.

Blind runner’s double dream

C_71_article_1061328_image_list_ima A DETERMINED Bollingtonian has battled through being registered blind to achieve her Olympic dream.

Libby Clegg, 18, who attended St Albans Primary School, started her sprinting career with the Macclesfield Harriers and is now Beijing-bound to represent the UK in the 100m and 200m events at the Paralympic Games.

The sprinter, who was born in Bollington and moved to Scotland when she was 12, has a deteriorating eye condition called Stargardt’s disease and has only slight peripheral vision in her left eye.

She was diagnosed when she was nine, but undeterred, signed up with Macclesfield Harriers and went on to win silver in the 200m at the World Championships, aged 16.

And she just missed out on a medal in the 100m because her guide runner crossed the line before her.

Libby, third in the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2006, said: "I used to win at sports days, and realised that sprinting was for me and asked to go along to the Harriers.
