Runners should wear reflective clothing

Blog:  Here's a letter to the editor that was printed in a newspaper in Tracy, Calfornia.  It's important for us all to remember to wear reflective clothing when we run.

EDITOR,

This is to alert my neighbor who was jogging on Whispering Wind Drive at about 6:50 a.m. Thursday — I understand you are trying to keep fit. Why were you trying to see if a car could hit you?

You were jogging in the street on Whispering Wind in a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. The rain had stopped, but the roads were still wet. I missed you with my car because you had just run underneath a streetlight, so I could see you. If you had not run underneath that light just before I got to you, you might be in the hospital — or worse.

Please use reflective tape or put a reflector on your backside so any car coming from your rear can see you. Do use a little more caution when jogging in the dark.

I would like to be able to get to work without having to call the police because I hit or killed a neighbor.

The shirt that changes sweat to heat

Blog:  Have any of you used or heard of Mizuno's "Breathe Thermo" line of running clothes?  Outside of the typical marketing hype, Mizuno claims that the shirt uses a chemical reaction to change sweat to heat.

Hmmm.  For me, as much as I sweat, the shirt may get so hot that it bursts into flames.

I'll probably pick one of these up and give it a try.  Sounds interesting.

BTW, this is not an ad for Mizuno.  I just found this shirt on the web and think it sounds interesting.  I'm all about gadgets.....and this shirt falls into that category (if it works).

Here's a link to the shirt on the Mizuno website

Hot Tips for Training in the Cold

Images6 Blog:  I know I've posted quite a few articles lately about training in the cold, but it appears that many people lose their motivation when it's cold.  I'm hoping that if I post more articles about it that it will help those of you who need it (and me, too).

The article talks about experimenting with clothes to see what works for you.  It also gives some good tips for winter training at the bottom.

How microfiber manufacturers are fighting body odor

Blog:  The microfiber manufacturers apparently think we smell bad.  And with that, they are coming up with new technology to kill our body odor.  I guess they think we just keep wearing our clothes without washing them.    In all seriousness, this is a good thing.  After I run, my running gear is normally soaked.  If left on the floor unattended for a few hours,  it will become toxic and my wife has to put on a Hazmat suit to deal with it.

Here's an article from the Wall Street Journal about what these manufacturers are doing to take the stink out.  Pretty interesting stuff.

Running in the Dark: You NEED Reflective Clothing

Images5_2 Blog:  If you read my post from yesterday about safety tips, you know that running in the dark isn't the best thing to do.  However, if you must do it, you need to wear reflective clothing.  And what's the most important rule about reflective clothing?  You can never wear too much.

I don't run at night.  I'm afraid of the holes in the road that will break my ankle.  What about you?  Do you run at night?  If so, what do you wear to keep cars from flattening you like a pancake?  Comment below.

Here's a brief article on the subject
