Motorist comes to aid of unconscious jogger

Blog:  This is a good reason why we should always carry identification when running.

"Phoenix police are trying to identify a jogger who was found unconscious Monday by drivers near Seventh Street and Bethany Home Road. The man, who is in his late 50s, is in critical condition at a local hospital, police said.

Passing motorists reported seeing the man jogging around 6 a.m. near Seventh Street and Montebello Road. When they saw him again, he appeared to have fallen and struck his head on the ground. One motorist found him unresponsive and began CPR until police responded and were able to get the man breathing on his own, police said.

Police described the man as White with thinning grey hair, about 6 feet tall, and weighing 180 pounds. He was wearing a blue tracksuit, white shirt and white running shoes and carried no identification.

No missing persons report were filed matching his description and police were unable to identify him using his fingerprints. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the man to contact the Missing Persons Investigation Unit at 602-534-2121 or 602-262-6141"

Gift of running leads Hall to lifelong dream -- the Olympics

Oly_g_rhall_580 Blog:  ESPN has posted a really good article about Ryan Hall.

"Ryan Hall always has had a longer view of life than the finish line of whatever point-to-point race he is running. At times, it has led him to doubt whether he should pursue such an all-consuming vocation.

"I do struggle with that at times," Hall told ESPN.com in a recent telephone conversation. "You find yourself questioning whether you're making an impact on the world, what lasting mark you're leaving."

The Privilege Of Being A Runner -- Part 2

Blog:   Here's Part 2 of  "The Privilege of Being a Runner" from MarathonDudeBill's running blog.

"Good news, 10 miles down and feeling pretty good. Bad news, 16 more miles and those 4 Newton hills. Miles 11 and 12 went down pretty easy in the big scheme of things. Again like some of the previous parts of the race, I honestly don't remember those 2 miles or even what my thoughts were at the time. I know at this point in races I invariably think about my family and how fortunate I am. I consider all the good things about this world and the not so good things that all too frequently could be changed or at least improved. I know I am a pretty simple guy who loves his family, values his life, loves having the ability to run, and maybe thinks just a little bit too much. A little before the half way point of the Boston Marathon is the section known as the "scream zone"."

The Privilege Of Being A Runner -- Part 1

Blog:  This article is from MarathonDudeBill's running blog.  He describes his Boston Marathon experience.

"Wow, I don't even know where to start. That was the most amazing experience I have ever had as a runner. And I know how lucky and fortunate I am to have lived it. If I can make you (the people who have given up their valuable time to read this) feel even one tenth of what I felt, you will be tingling from head to toe. You will feel so alive that you will be bursting with life and energy. The expo was great, the hotel room was adequate for my needs, and the weather was fine.. but lets get to the good stuff. Are you ready to run the Boston Marathon with me??"

_44610895_redhoserace_2261 Blog:  The 500th Carnwath Red Hose Race will take place on June 22 in Scotland.  About 150 people are expected to participate in one of the world's oldest running events.

The 3 mile race was started by James IV in 1508.  The goal was to find the fastest runner in the village so that he could run the 3 miles to warn others of invaders.  The runner would wear red hose so that the people would be able to recognize him.

Runner happy with 8-hour finish time

Colorado resident  Michael McBride doesn't mind answering the same questions over and over. He's just happy to have the ability to answer them.

He finished the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon not in the time he wanted, but he did finish.

Striving for a time of 7 hours, McBride came in at 8 hours, 13 minutes

He finished, and his oxygen cart wasn't too far behind. A friend created a combination of a rickshaw and a trailer device for him to place all his oxygen tanks. It can hold up to 100 pounds.

He suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung ailment that more than 13 million Americans suffer from.

"It was just great to be out here,” McBride said. "I'm a little hot, and my feet hurt. In other words, I'm just like any other runner.”

This was his second full marathon.

Jogger mauled by bear on Kenai Peninsula

Images17 Blog:  And I thought it was tough dodging dogs while running.  Check this out...

KENAI, Alaska (AP) - A jogger was mauled by a brown bear on the Kenai Peninsula in what state officials are calling the first mauling of 2008.

The mauling is being blamed on improperly stored garbage.

Larry Lewis, a wildlife technician who investigated the mauling for the Division of Wildlife Conservation, said he found several large buckets of garbage on the victim's porch, about 150 yards from where the mauling occurred.

The 43-year-old victim, who has not been identified, was charged by a sow with two cubs when he left his home early Tuesday. The man turned and fled, but the bear quickly caught him, biting his buttocks, the back of his head and his chest.

The man underwent surgery at a local hospital.

Kenyan violence haunted and united champion Cheruiyot, countrymen

The symbolism was more significant this year than ever. Robert Cheruiyot wearing the laurel wreath, holding the silver victor's trophy, listening to his national anthem in Copley Square.

After Kenya's winter of discontent, disruption, and death, it was important that one of its own runners win the world's most renowned marathon yesterday afternoon, if only to show that one tradition is immutable.
